Belize (British Honduras)
December 2001
From Belize City we went made camp on Caye Caulker, later
on Ambergris Caye in San Petro. The last four days we spend in the jungle
near San Ignacio.

Caye Caulker, a tiny island
behind the riff. A great starting point to visit dive sites and even tinier
islands |

San Petro -- a little bit more touristy |
Locals or tourists? You guess! |

Later we canoed two
miles into the cave. There were some tight spots. We had two other
canoes on this trip led by a local guide. What we did not know, in one
canoe there were two people who could not swim. One not smart enough
to wear a life preserver. Guess which canoe tipped. There were no
flotation chambers in the alloy canoe, and the battery that we needed for
the lights dragged the canoe down. Yupp, this trip ended in a full
fledged live rescue mission. Led by our two experienced rescue swimmers --
Tanja and me. The water was deep and there was no room at the edges to
stand up. We had to drag them to the exit. Everyone made it out alive.
My fourth successful water rescue mission -- the first one in a cave. |

At the Maya ruins, Alina barely escaped a
scarification attempt by a tourist priest. |
We insisted, Alina does not need a ticket!
And always remember: "No matter how cute she might be, don't joke with U.S.
security." |
