And the Winner is ...
Everything started quite harmless: to meet some new people here in Lubbock, we signed Alina up for a baby crawling competition at a local supermarket. She won, and one week later, she was supposed to be in the final baby derby. A colleague joked in the faculty meeting that this is easier than getting grant money (I still hope to prove him wrong).
Fun turned into serious big buck competition. February 17, 2001 the final derby was organized in the half time break of a basketball game in the United Spirits arena here at Texas Tech University. Alina ignored the eyes and cheers of thousands of spectators, the TV camera lights, press photographers, the other competitors with their moms and dads in a racing frenzy, and ran directly to mama (or away from daddy?). I could not shoot photographs of the actual race.
